GSO - A Classical Triumvirate
Sunday 7 July 2:00pm
Experience
the grandeur of classical music with the Gippsland Symphony Orchestra
in its celebration of three titans of classical music as we present A
Classical Triumvirate featuring masterpieces by Mozart, Haydn and
Beethoven.
Composed at the tender age of 15 Mozart’s Divertimento
No 1 K113 in Eb Major (1771) is a composition of firsts, most notable is
the first time he featured the clarinet in his compositions. This work
showcases the extraordinary youthful talent for melody, form, and
orchestration. Divertimento No 1 is a pointer to the genius of a composer
who revolutionised the world of classical music.
Haydn Symphony No
101 in D Major “The Clock” is one of the most
celebrated works of the late classical period. Composed in 1793 during
Haydn’s second trip to London the symphony explores, new for the time,
approaches to rhythm, orchestration, and melodic ideas. This work along
with Beethoven’s symphonic catalogue moved the composition ethos
inextricably towards the Romanticism of the late C18 and C19.
Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 4 in Bb Major is an understated masterpiece of the classical
era. Situated between the titanic 3rd and 5th symphonies the 4th offers a
wealth of musical invention and depth. From the stirring opening to the
thrilling finale this symphony showcases the brilliance of Beethoven and
stands as a testament to his creativity and mastery of the symphonic form.
