GSO - Symphonic Masters

Sunday 10 November 2:00pm

Gippsland Symphony Orchestra presents SYMPHONIC MASTERS at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.

Serge Prokofiev – Selections from Romeo and Juliet Suite 1 & 2

Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet is a ballet composed in 1935-1936 based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name. Prokofiev also arranged three orchestral suites and a set of ten piano pieces from the music for the ballet. The GSO has selected from suites 1 and 2 for this performance: Montagues and Capulets, Madrigal, Minuet, Masks, Death of Tybalt, Friar Laurence, and Romeo at Juliet's Tomb. Prokofiev’s suites are some of the most memorable and dramatic moments from the ballet, capturing the essence of his powerful and evocative compositional style. The suites are often performed in concert and have become popular pieces in the orchestral repertoire.

Claude Debussy – Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra – soloist Niels Bijl

In 1901 American saxophonist Elise Hall had requested Claude Debussy to compose a piece for the saxophone, however, he didn’t take the commission seriously and looked scornfully on the abilities of Hall as a saxophonist and as such did not work on the commission for some time. Hall made many trips to Paris to meet with Debussy and he eventually began to work on the piece and sent the score for saxophone and piano to Hall in 1911. It was subsequently arranged for orchestra by Jean Roger-Ducasse in 1919.

Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 4

Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 4, Op. 98, is a monumental work in the symphonic repertoire, composed in 1884-1885. This highly regarded symphony explores emotional depth, structural coherence, and symphonic innovation, making it a cornerstone of Romantic symphonic repertoire. After its premiere performance, the symphony received mixed reviews. Listeners were challenged by the dense, rich textural colours and the complexity of its structures. It is now viewed as the work of a genius and rightly celebrated as one of the great symphonic achievements, a work that combines romantic intellectualism and emotional expressionism. The fourth symphony by Brahms places him in the vanguard of symphonic composers, a rightful heir to Beethoven’s crown.

Elvis The Legendary Performer

Friday 29 November 7:30pm

Elvis Presley is a legend. Of that, there is no doubt.

Mark Anthony, Australia’s premier Elvis tribute artist, is himself a legendary artist. With his international-class band, Mark Anthony’s performances as Elvis are always sold out, earning him the status of Australia’s number-one Elvis tribute artist. Mark is also recognised by Elvis Presley Enterprises and Graceland USA, as one of the top professional tribute artists in the world today. Mark’s tribute to Elvis is flawless - in music, mood, and movement. Like a well-trained and gifted actor, Mark ‘becomes’ Elvis in a mysterious, magical way that is difficult to describe. Simply, you have to experience it for yourself.

This new show, “Elvis – A Legendary Performer” is the story of Elvis’ magnificent Comeback Special in 1968 and the triumphant performances that followed in the 1970s. These were the performances in which Elvis shook off the shackles of cinematic mediocrity and reclaimed his position as the ultimate performer of the age.

Mark’s performances of these timeless songs, backed by his world-class band, are indistinguishable from the originals: abundantly energetic, meticulously orchestrated, and brilliantly performed. You will leave the theatre mesmerised - wondering what it was that just happened.

It does not – cannot - get any better than this! Watch a preview of Elvis The Legendary Performer on YouTube.

A Very Aussie Christmas

Friday 6 December 11:00am

Santa’s slapping on the sunblock and squeezing into a pair of board shorts! Is that a six pack of wallabies pulling the sleigh? Pass the aeroguard and help yourself to another plate of Nanna’s famous trifle - it’s going to be A Very Aussie Christmas!

Two of Australian musical theatre's favourite funny ladies Melissa Langton and Susan Ann Walker join forces to fire up the BBQ, pour the custard on the plum pudding and lead some Yuletide singalongs around the old ‘goanna’. Fancy a nice pair of socks? A novelty fly swatter? Yet another copy of Michael Buble’s Christmas CD? There’ll be Aussie Christmas gifts up for grabs for those who come prepared to share a classic Christmas Cracker joke!

Of course, we’ll still be decorating the tree and singing Silent Night and Away in a Manger - but songs about snow are definitely a no go! A heart-warming celebration of all the great Aussie Christmas traditions new and old!

John Waters - Radio Luxembourg

Friday 21 February 8:00pm

Iconic star of stage and screen John Waters celebrates the songs of the British Pop Invasion that changed modern music forever. The newest show from John Waters, featuring Stewart D’Arrietta and the Chartbusters presents an era of music that remains in the cellular memory of fans over generations.

From the evocative strains of Where Do You Go to My Lovely, the memory-dredging Waterloo Sunset and To Love Somebody, to the infectious grooves of Itchycoo Park and the anthemic My Generation, Waters and his band reprise and reinvent the classic hits.

When commercial radio licences were not available in the 1960s UK, pop and rock music was broadcast from Luxembourg, a clever move by the British record industry to circumnavigate the laws of the day. With his six-piece band and singers in brilliant voice, Waters recounts this loophole, anecdotes and moving memories of the era, taking the audience through the time continuum to songs that resound over decades.

The Beatles exploded onto the scene followed by so many more, and the British Invasion truly began, including The Moody Blues, The Kinks, The Who, and scores of others. Their legendary songs live on stage as Radio Luxembourg are a stirring and enjoyable experience. It’s impossible to keep still!

The Roy Orbison Story

Sunday 11 May 2:00pm

Experience the wonder of Roy Orbison in this brilliant theatrical portrayal of the man, his music, his voice, & his life.

You will find yourself believing you are in his presence, transported back in time, reliving the emotion of each of his songs & the stories of his life.

Mark Shelley is simply brilliant in his characterisation of Roy. He not only has the vocal range & tone to honour his songs, but he also has the sensitivity & artistic ability to ‘be’ Roy.

Without a doubt, this is the definitive portrayal of Roy Orbison - the man, his music & his life.

'Only the Lonely', 'Running Scared', 'Sweet Dream Baby', 'Candy Man', 'Blue Bayou', 'In Dreams', 'Anything You Want', 'Crying', 'Workin for the Man', 'Penny Arcade', 'Pretty Woman', and many more.

The ‘Big O’ stood head & shoulders above the rest, his vocals were peerless, his range extraordinary. His songs are unique, impassioned & personal. Orbison, the man, was enigmatic, driven, shy, funny, and quietly charismatic.

From his initial success in the 1960s to the resurgence of his career in the '80s, Roy Orbison’s voice remained remarkable, communicating an emotional intensity not experienced in popular music before or since. His songs conveyed vulnerability, love, loss & fun. His performance was unique, simple & powerful.

Orbison’s life was littered with personal tragedy, & career highs & lows. His wonderful resurgence in popularity in the late '80s through his legendary ‘Black & White Night’ Concert, his solo album ‘Mystery Girl’, & the formation of the Supergroup ‘The Traveling Wilburys’ was a fitting final chapter for such a creative genius.
